Mongolian Throat Singer & instrument maker Baatarsuren Chadraabal brings his music & craftsmanship to Europe

August 25 – September 14, 2026

About Baatarsuren Chadraabal

Baatarsuren Chadraabal (1978) is a versatile Mongolian musician, master throat singer, and traditional instrument maker from Khovd in Western Mongolia — considered one of the birthplaces of throat singing traditions.

From the age of seven, he dedicated himself to the art of khöömii (throat singing). He later studied music and vocal education in Ulaanbaatar and further specialized as a professional musician and instrumentalist.

Baatarsuren masters multiple styles of Mongolian throat singing and has performed at national and international festivals. He is respected not only for his deep knowledge of the tradition, but also for his ability to teach and share it in an authentic and accessible way.

In addition to his work as a performer, he is also an accomplished instrument maker. He builds traditional West Mongolian instruments such as the ikel khuur, tovshuur, tsuur, morin khuur, and traditional drums — a rare combination of musical mastery and craftsmanship.

A Unique Cultural Collaboration

The arrival of Baatarsuren Chadraabal in Europe marks a special cultural exchange between Mongolia and the Netherlands. In collaboration with Altai, this project presents not only concerts, but also immersive educational programs where music, craftsmanship, and tradition come together.

This tour offers a rare opportunity to not only hear Mongolian music, but to actively experience it — from voice to instrument, from tradition to practice.

Program 2026

Concerts

Intimate and powerful performances where throat singing, overtone singing, and traditional instruments come together. Baatarsuren guides audiences into the sound world of the Mongolian steppe through ancient melodies, improvisations, and a direct connection to tradition.

Depending on the setting, he performs solo, as a duo with Rowan Hartsuiker (featuring Altai Harp, tovshuur, morin khuur, and throat singing), or as a trio with Mongolian guest musicians, including morin khuur and Mongolian harp players. This variety makes every concert unique.

2-Day Workshop — Throat Singing & Overtones

An intensive introduction to the techniques of throat singing and overtone singing. Participants learn about breathing, resonance, and vocal techniques under the direct guidance of a master from the tradition.

4-Day Instrument Building Course

A unique hands-on experience where participants learn to build a traditional Mongolian string instrument. Guided by Baatarsuren, you will go through the complete process — from raw materials to a fully playable instrument.

Organized by Altai

This collaboration is organized by Altai (The Netherlands), founded by Rowan Hartsuiker and Saran Myagmarsuren. Altai focuses on sharing Mongolian music and culture through concerts, workshops, retreats, and cultural experiences. The combination of live performance and education lies at the heart of their vision: not only listening to the music, but also understanding, experiencing, and creating it yourself.
