For the first time in Europe: “Nar Sur” — Throat Singing & Music from Balochistan

Planned for August 2026

About the Musicians

Nar Sur is a rare tradition of throat singing and music from Balochistan (Pakistan), deeply rooted in poetry, oral storytelling, and the daily life of Balochi communities. For the first time, this living musical tradition will be shared in Europe by three musicians from the Bugti tribe.

Asad — Algoza (Narri)

Asad is a highly talented algoza player within the Nar Sur tradition. The algoza is a double flute consisting of a melody pipe and a drone pipe. Through a special breathing technique, he creates the rhythmic foundation of the music. Asad has performed for many years at concerts, ceremonies, and community gatherings, fulfilling the traditional role of Narri (flute player).

Ameen — Dambiro (Balochi Tambura)

Ameen is a young and promising musician who plays the dambiro, a traditional string instrument with a rich and resonant sound. After the passing of his father — himself a respected musician — Ameen continued his musical legacy. Through his performances, he supports his family while actively contributing to the preservation of Balochi musical heritage.

Haider Ali — Throat Singing (Surri)

Haider Ali is an experienced and respected Nar Sur throat singer. As Surri, he weaves his voice together with the sounds of the algoza and dambiro, bringing Balochi poetry to life through song. His repertoire consists of stories and melodies passed down through generations, captivating audiences with deep emotion and intensity.

A Historic Cultural Moment

Balochistan is often only seen internationally through stories of political tension and difficult circumstances. This tour offers a different perspective: Balochistan through its music, culture, poetry, and the voices of its people.

This project marks a remarkable cultural moment — the very first time this throat singing and musical tradition will be shared live with European audiences. For concert halls, festivals, and cultural organizations, it offers a rare opportunity to present a deeply authentic yet almost unknown musical culture.

Concerts & Interactive Workshops

The tour consists of two closely connected elements:

Concerts

The concerts focus on sharing music, stories, and tradition. Audiences experience the full power and atmosphere of Nar Sur, accompanied by short introductions and explanations about the origins and meaning of the music.

Interactive Workshops

Alongside the concerts, the musicians also offer workshops and in-depth sessions. Participants will have the unique opportunity to:

  • Explore Nar Sur throat singing techniques
  • Learn about the cultural background of the music
  • Try traditional instruments such as the algoza themselves

Concert Description

Ready-to-use text for venues and festivals

Nar Sur is a rare and powerful tradition of throat singing and music from Balochistan (Pakistan), deeply rooted in language, oral storytelling, and poetic expression. For centuries, Nar Sur has played an essential role in preserving the collective memory, history, and identity of Balochi communities — carrying stories, knowledge, and lived experiences from generation to generation.

For the very first time in Europe, three Balochi musicians bring this ancient and living musical tradition to the stage. During the concert, the sounds of the algoza (double flute), the dambiro (Balochi tambura), and the distinctive throat singing merge into an intense musical dialogue. Melody, rhythm, and voice intertwine with Balochi poetry, creating a sound world that is at once raw, meditative, hypnotic, and deeply emotional. The music tells stories of land, history, community, and human connection.

Alongside the performances, the musicians also share stories and explanations about the origins and meanings of the songs. The result is not simply a concert, but an encounter with a living culture that is rarely experienced outside its own region.

This performance offers audiences a unique opportunity to experience Nar Sur as it was always meant to be experienced: not merely as music that is performed, but as music that is lived. A rare and extraordinary concert where tradition, storytelling, poetry, and sound come together — for the first time in Europe.
