Part 1

Multi-Day Workshops — Discover the Power of the Female Voice in Mongolian Throat Singing

During several immersive multi-day workshops — including a 4-day retreat in Groningen and a 2-day workshop in Bremen — we dive deeply into the world of Mongolian throat singing. One of the most frequently asked questions is: Can women also learn throat singing? Because of the deep and resonant sounds often associated with Mongolian throat singing, many people assume it is something only men can do. Yet many female artists from Mongolia, Tuva, and Buryatia prove otherwise — including Zolzayaa from Khovd in Western Mongolia. With her impressive vocal range, control, and finesse, she demonstrates that throat singing is not about physical strength, but about breath, resonance, technique, and inner balance. The workshops are fully arranged and include accommodation, meals, and multiple daily sessions guided by Zolzayaa, with support from Rowan.

Part 2

Concerts, Presentations & Demonstrations

The second part of this project focuses on sharing Zolzayaa’s music and talent with wider audiences. As a female throat singer born in Chandmani Sum (Khovd, Western Mongolia) — a region often considered the birthplace of Mongolian throat singing — she represents a new generation keeping this ancient tradition alive. During her performances, Zolzayaa takes audiences on a musical journey through Mongolian songs, throat singing, and traditional instruments. She is also a gifted player of the tsuur (Western Mongolian flute), tovshuur (two-stringed lute), morin khuur (horsehead fiddle), and mouth harp. Through her music and storytelling, she brings the strength of female expression within an ancient musical tradition vividly to life.

The art of throat singing shows that strength is not only physical. Artists like Zolzayaa are redefining what was once seen as a male tradition.

A space where women can discover, share & strengthen their voice.

This special project is designed for women who wish to explore, deepen, and strengthen their voice in a supportive and inspiring environment. Together, we explore the power of breath, resonance, overtones, and sound through the ancient art of khöömii.

Over the course of several days, participants practice in small groups, share music and stories around the fire, and experience moments of silence, connection, and personal growth. It is a space for creativity, empowerment, and meaningful connection — where the female voice can fully express its own strength and beauty.
